This grater was thrown on the wheel and then altered and trimmed. It was painted with orange underglaze and the flower design was carved into the clay, a process called sgraffito. Then the bumps to grate were carefully added with slip and left to dry.
Once bone dry, it was fired, the center was painted with yellow underglaze and then a clear glaze was applied over the entire piece. It was fired one last time for this final result.
This grater can be used to grate garlic, ginger, and any hard cheese.
